Trailer Park Tuesdays - The Zero Theorem

Trailer Park Tuesdays is everything.
Trailer Park Tuesdays is nothing.

I have long been a big fan of Terry Gilliam's work.  Brazil, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Twelve Monkeys, Time Bandits, etc., he's made some great movies.  His last few films have been. . .well, they've been Brothers Grimm, Tideland, and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, so they've been a mixed bag of not-that-greatness.

Regardless, I still get excited when I hear about a Terry Gilliam project and I get double-excited when he actually finishes it and, hey look!, he finished a new movie!  This one is called The Zero Theorem.  Here's the official synopsis:

"The Zero Theorem stars two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds) as Qohen Leth, an eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst.  Living in a burnt-out church, Qohen is obsessively working on a mysterious project personally delegated to him by Management (Matt Damon) aimed at discovering the meaning of life - or the lack thereof - once and for all.  Increasingly disturbed by unwanted visits from people he doesn't fully trust, including the flirtatious Bainsley (Mélanie Thierry), Management's wunderkind son Bob (Lucas Hedges), his unpredictable colleague Joby (David Thewlis), and would-be digital therapist Dr. Shrink-Rom (Tilda Swinton), it's only when he experiences the power of love and desire that he's able to understand his own reason for being."

Yup. Sounds like something Gilliam would make.  Looks like it too.
Here's the official trailer:

The Zero Theorem is available On Demand right now in some places (go look for it) and will open in select theaters starting September 19th (go see it).

Trailer Park Tuesdays - Autómata

Once again it's Trailer Park Tuesdays.  Insert clever comment here.

This week's trailer is for a movie called Autómata.  I ran across this thing last week and, while it doesn't look all that original in concept, I do like the aesthetic look this trailer gives off and it has me intrigued with the Antonio Banderas, the Dylan McDermott, and even the Melanie Griffith.
And hey, Robert Forster is in there too, and that's always cool in my book.

Autómata opens up in limited release on October 10th.

Trailer Park Tuesdays - Coherence

Trailer Park Tuesdays:  Back open for business.

This week's trailer is for an indie sci-fi mind-bender.

It's COHERENCE.

Here's the official synopsis:

On the night of an astrological anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events.  Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, COHERENCE is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.

Sounds good, right?  This looks to be one of those low budget, puzzle box kind of movies.  It has been getting some good press after doing the festival circuit earlier this year and, to me, this is one to definitely check out.  I'm always looking and rooting for an underdog picture to come out of nowhere and knock it out of the park (or at least solidly entertain).  Is Coherence one of those movies?  Maybe.
Check out the official movie trailer:

Yeah.  I'll see that.

For further evidence of the film's mood and premise, here's a teaser clip:

Coherence was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, who has been working with Gore Verbinski for a number of years in a conceptual consultant capacity (he also has co-story credit on Rango [2011]).  This was his first feature film.

The cast includes Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling (Homeland), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Elizabeth Gracen (Marked for Death), Lauren Maher (Scarlett in the Pirates movies), Hugo Armstrong, Lorene Scafaria, and Alex Manugian (who also conceived of the story for Coherence).

Coherence is being released by Oscilloscope Laboratories and will be playing select cities (LA and NY) starting June 20th before spreading out elsewhere along the west coast (it opens in my neck of the woods July 11th).

For everybody else, the film is also available on VOD.  Check out the official website for more info.

Here's the one-sheet.  It's rad:

Trailer Park Tuesdays - Under the Skin

Hey it's Trailer Park Tuesdays, reopened and back in business (that business being sharing and talking about movie trailers for upcoming releases that are [possibly] flying under your radar).  Welcome.

Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin is a dark, erotic, sci-fi thriller starring Scarlett Johansson as an alien who is seducing and luring men to her home for mysterious purposes.  That's really all you need to know, but I'll go ahead and throw in that it's based on the book of the same name by Michael Faber.

This is Glazer's first film in ten years.  His previous two, Sexy Beast (2000) and Birth (2004), are both really good, great even, so a new film from him automatically gets my attention.  Add in the erotic sci-fi alien Johansson and my attention has been doubled.

Below is the first full trailer for Under the Skin.
It's light on plot and heavy on the visuals, and those visuals are heavy.

Yes.

I like the way this looks.  The invoking of Kubrick's name in the pull-quotes is something I could do without, but whatever.  I'm surprised they didn't go for a twofer and mention David Lynch (that shot of the trees!).

I've read that festival audiences have been divided on the film, but that seems to be the case with Glazer's movies.
He aims for cult/niche, making films for specific audiences, rather than wide, mass appeal.  Well, this appeals to me and I'll be in the audience.

Under the Skin opens up April 6th, hopefully in a city near you.
